Vato Relay

Run the AI of your conversations on your own server with your Claude and Codex accounts, while files and commands stay on your computer.

Vato Relay is a Vato Connect machine dedicated to your account, running on a server. In a relay conversation:

  • the AI (Claude Code or Codex) runs on the relay, with the accounts connected there;
  • every tool — reading and editing files, searching, running commands, git — runs on the computer that started the conversation, through Vato's end-to-end encrypted relay.

Your project is never copied to the server, and the relay never runs code. The conversation lives on the relay, so your other devices can follow and continue it.

Before you start

  • A relay enrolled for your account and online. Setting it up is a server task: see the administrator notes in the repository (docs/vato-relay.md).
  • At least one Claude or Codex account connected on the relay. Antigravity isn't supported on a relay.

Connect an account on the relay

  1. In the sidebar, open the machine menu (Choose a computer) and pick your relay. It is listed as Vato Relay · always on.
  2. In the composer of the Remote view, open the account picker and click Add.
  3. Finish signing in in the browser that opens on this computer. The identity stays encrypted on the relay.

Start a conversation on Vato Relay

  1. Open a project on this computer.
  2. In the composer, click the Execution context chip and choose your relay: AI on your server · files and commands on this computer.
  3. Send your first message.

The conversation appears in your sidebar like any other. The chip then shows the relay's name, and the execution context can no longer change.

Continue from another device

  • Phone and vatoide.com/app: the relay appears as one of your machines. Open the conversation and keep writing.
  • Another computer: pick the relay in Choose a computer to see all its conversations.

Tools always run on the computer that started the conversation, so it must be online. If it is offline, the agent's tool calls fail with a RELAY_PC_OFFLINE error and the agent tells you it can't reach the files; the conversation stays readable everywhere.

Conversations created directly on the relay (from your phone or the Remote view) have no linked computer: they appear under Vato Relay · sans outils and the agent can only chat.

Limits

  • Only Claude and Codex run on a relay.
  • Relayed tools cover files, search and commands (up to 240 seconds per command). Dev servers, computer use and integrations aren't available in relay conversations.
  • Image attachments aren't supported in relay conversations yet.
